Government denies polishow cutback rumours

Lobby group’s claims of downturn denied by spokesman.

Firsties plan rural push

First Metropolitan Church plans tour of ‘hard to reach’ areas.

Government spokesman Ormstak Bemfrist responded this morning to claims by popular lobby group Value For Money of a steady decline in polishow programming in recent years.  ‘That’s rubbish,’ he said.  ‘For one thing, polishow programming isn’t scheduled by the Government, or any of the political parties.  It’s scheduled by the broadcasters, according to the formula set down in the deal reached over ten years ago.  I’m not aware of any lessening of content, but if there has been, VFM should take that up with the broadcasters.  It’s not the Government’s decision.’

VFM’s reaction was ungenerous:  ‘He would say that, wouldn’t he,’ sad their Chief Agitator Arsnit Dengal.  ‘It’s Bemfrist’s job to present the truth as the government would like it to be, not as it is.  He knows perfectly well that the broadcasters’ job consists largely of cajoling unwilling parties into participating in the polishows.  The politicians hate them, but the people are paying for their politicians and they want their money’s worth.  The people aren’t interested in hearing excuses about work and family commitments;  politicians know the deal when they sign up.  We want to be entertained, and God knows we pay enough for them.  We’ve measured a 10% decline in polishow programming year on year over the past five years.  The politicians are squeezing it as much as they can, but I haven’t noticed them volunteering for a 10% pay cut.’
